Don't Store Certain Things in Your Attic
It’s a tale as old as time… you find something old that you don’t have space for and you store it in the attic. Job done! But then the trouble starts, because it turns out a lot of things shouldn’t actually be stored in the attic. These eight things, for example, should stay well away from there.
Paint
Storing paint in the attic just isn’t a smart move, sorry. All that heat and cold up there can mess it up fast, turning it into a chunky, useless mess. Once it separates or dries out, it's done. You're better off keeping leftover paint in a cool spot like a basement or closet.
Wooden Furniture
Have you inherited some nice wooden furniture? Don’t stick it in the attic while you work out what to do with it. Wood doesn’t handle temperature swings or humidity well. It can crack, warp, or just fall apart over time. No-one wants to open their attic and find their furniture ruined.
Musical Instruments
Musical instruments are so expensive and people treat them so badly. They put their precious instruments in an attic where the heat, cold, and humidity can totally wreck it, and then act surprised when the strings snap or the wood warps.
Vinyl Records
Love your vintage record collection? Then keep it out of the attic. Heat warps vinyl, and once the records bend, they’ll never sound the same. The sleeves can get musty too. If you want your records to actually play in the future, store them indoors somewhere dry and cool.
Artwork
Paintings, prints, or anything framed really don’t belong in an attic. Heat and moisture can fade colors, ruin frames, and even grow mold. Not a good look. Besides, don’t you want that artwork to be on the wall somewhere where it can be seen?
Photos
You really need to take good care of your photos, because you’re not getting those things back once they’re ruined. Temperature swings and moisture in the attic can make them stick together, curl, or fade into nothing… so keep them in the main part of the house, and consider digitizing them.
Candles
Storing candles in the attic sounds convenient, until summer hits. Then they melt, bend, and sometimes even stick to stuff. And if that wasn’t bad enough, they can also crack in the winter. Keep your candles nice by storing them in the house.
Clothes and Linens
Tossing clothes and extra bedding into the attic seems like a great idea for saving space, but you might be sorry later. Heat, moisture, and bugs can ruin fabric, especially anything natural like wool or cotton. You might open that box next season and find musty, stained clothes covered in dead bugs.
